This native is a very nice shrub to add to your moist, wet garden areas. It's summer foliage is very attractive and its fall color is beautiful lasting longer than most other plants fall coloration. It often lasts through the winter in the warmest regions of its hardiness zone range. Growers occasionally water stress plants slightly in containers to induce fall color. Plants stay fairly small making it nicely suited for residential landscapes. Although native to moist and wet spots in the woods as an understory plant where it forms a loose open canopy, placing the plant in sunny spot allows it to develop a full, dense canopy. Plants sucker and can be divided as they grow. Plants serve as butterfly nectar sources.
