'Chippewa' is a half-high blueberry cultivar developed by the University of Minnesota and introduced into commerce in 1996. Half-high cultivars have excellent winter hardiness and are good selections for growing in UDSA zones 3 and 4. Half-high cultivars are hybrid crosses between high bush (Vaccinium corymbosum) and low bush (Vaccinium angustifolium). ‘Chippewa’ is a compact upright shrub that typically grows to only 3-4' tall. It tolerates winter temperatures to -40 degrees F. It produces fruit in mid season (late June-July in St. Louis). Waxy, bell-shaped, white flowers bloom in late spring. Flowers are followed by medium-sized blueberries noted for sweetness and light blue color. Elliptic, medium green leaves (to 3” long) turn attractive shades of yellow-orange to red and purple in fall.
